Senator Carlton B. Wilderment is interviewed
By Biff Carlyle
United States Senator Carlton B. Wilderment is interviewed by Biff Carlyle about the current discontent with government and the apparent polarization and gridlock in Washington.
Biff
“Senator, you must know that the American public is fed up and frustrated about the inability of our Senators and Representatives
to work together to accomplish some meaningful solutions to our country’s problems.”
Senator B. Wilderment
Yes, yes, my fellow Senators
know that the people are upset, but everyone should know that we’re doing our best.”
Biff
“But, Senator, everything in Washington
is divided into Democrat and Republican areas. Democrats won’t vote for anything brought up by Republicans and vice versa.”
Senator
B. Wilderment
“Well, we do have our parties to be loyal to.”
Biff
“Yes, Senator, but our government is in gridlock. It’s frozen. Does
your party think that absolutely everything brought up by the opposition party is bad?”
Senator B. Wilderment
“No, of course not.
But you must understand that if I were to vote with the opposition party that would make the leaders of my party very angry. I might
not get their support during the next election. I could actually be voted out of office without their financial support and backing.”
Biff
“Do your party bosses, I mean leadership, tell you how to vote?”
Senator B. Wilderment
“Well, they don’t exactly tell us how
to vote. They just go over the harm it could do to our party if we made the other guys look good.
Biff
“Are you saying that it is
of prime importance that the opposition party to not do anything that makes the other party appear successful? How can you enact any
worthwhile legislation with that attitude?”
Senator B. Wilderment
“Look, we do the best we can. If you were me would you want to endanger
your chances of being re-elected just because you voted for something the other guys proposed?
Biff
“Don’t you think it’s more important
to serve your country, your constituents, by doing the right thing regardless of who brings it up? The American people are depending
on you and your fellow Senators to do the right thing. Everyone is sick and tired of you so called protectors of the ‘American Way’
acting like a bunch of elitist, giving themselves raises and garnering privileged benefits.”
Senator B. Wilderment
“Wait a minute,
I don’t think that’s being fair. We work hard for our pay.”
Biff
“You may Senator. You may, but your inability to work together with
your loyal opposition to help Americans is turning the country against you. What America sees is many of you attending high society
DC parties, you golf at private clubs and you jet set around the world at our expense. America wants to see both parties working together
for the good of all Americans. There is a serious situation brewing in our land.”
Senator B. Wilderment
“What do you mean?”
Biff
“Take
a walk down Main street, Senator. Listen to what people are saying.”
Senator B. Wilderment
“Yes, yes. I’ve got to do that one day.
